Some conditions respond to treatment and in some cases the condition is considered a
temporary one.  Therapies such as counselling and pharmacological treatments are
sometimes used to help a person overcome the situation.

Conditions may include:

  • detachment from reality,

  • hallucinations,

  • severe depression or

  • bizarre behaviours, to name a few.

According to the University of California, Department of Psychiatry, examples of
conditions that are considered within this classification include: bipolar disorders, eating
disorders, depression, schizophrenia, anxiety/panic disorders and social disorders.  It
also expands to include Tourette Syndrome, Learning Disabilities and Autism in children.

Psychiatric conditions may develop due to social circumstance, the environment, drug
dependencies, heredity, or the person’s emotional status.  It may be enhanced by
tensions at work or around the world.  For example, the incidence of psychiatric
conditions worsening after the September 11 attacks nearly tripling (33% versus 13%
due to post traumatic stress disorders*) the number of people seeking some form of
medical assistance.

Classification of these conditions often overlap one another and often times a person
susceptible to psychiatric disorders has symptoms of multiple conditions.
